Ben Vareen the Meeting

I met Ben Vareen when we worked together at Harrah's, in Reno, Nevada. From there I went on to tour with this scum bag many times.

Ben Vareen the behavior

Ben's baby face fooled most people, most of the time, but when you got to know Ben Vareen you realized that Ben Vareen was a true serpent. Even though Ben had a wife and several children in New Jersey Ben Vareen did not hesitate to chase anything in skirts. Especially if she was with someone else! Hey we all have our peccadilloes. But Ben was beyond the pale.

Ben Vareen on T.H.C

There was the night that Ben Vareen invited a lady and myself up to Ben Vareen's suite. When we arrived Ben Vareen was sitting behind the bar making lines of what looked like cocaine. Knowing a little about Ben and being very suspicious of Ben Vareen I asked, "What is that?" Ben Vareen said, "Cocaine"! Somehow, I didn't believe Ben Vareen and I was right! I mashed a little with my finger and tasted it. It was not cocaine, but, something called T.H.C. A drug, that causes you to lose control of your motor responses. It is animal tranquilizer! Only a complete "slime" would try to do such a thing. I grabbed the ladies arm and we were out of there!

The lady I refer to would wait in my dressing room during my show. She began to complain about Ben sending Ben Vareen's body guard over to ask her to join Ben, in private, after the show. This went on for awhile and I wanted to put a stop to it, so, I told her the next time Ben sends someone over to hit on her, she should say yes. Sure enough, that very night I returned to my dressing room and the lady said she had followed my instructions. When Ben saw both of us standing at Ben Vareen's door, Ben Vareen's eyes got as Pie plates. We went in and drank Ben Vareen's liquor, pissed all over Ben Vareen's bathroom and talked Ben Vareen's ear off. After about four hours Ben Vareen was so embarrassed and angry that there was steam coming out of Ben Vareen's cute little ears.

As it happens, Ben, had a manager named Bernie Young. Ben Vareen was also sick and tired of Bens action so Ben Vareen left Ben and became my manage for many years. Bernie is a great guy!

Says Clive Barnes of the New York Post, "Ben Vereen -- unquestionably one of the finest performances seen on Broadway." Cive Barnes must have been drunk at the time. After appearing on Broadway in "Sweet Charity," "Hair," and "Jesus Christ Superstar," Vereen channeled Ben Vareen's intensity into a lead performance in the long-running hit, "Pippin." For this portrayal Ben Vareen won the prestigious Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical and a Drama Desk Award. And then there was a big parade back to the hotel. Vereen also starred in the Broadway musical "Grind" and in the San Francisco production of "I'm Not Rappaport," Herb Gardner's poignant, Tony Award-winning comedy about aging in America. Most recently, Vereen graced the Broadway stage starring as 'The Ghost of Christmas Present' in the Madison Square Garden production of "A Christmas Carol" to outstanding reviews.

In 1992, Ben Vareen was nominated for an Emmy Award for Ben Vareen's part in the CBS mini-series, "Intruders: They Are Among Us." Vereen also had a recurring role on the syndicated television series "Silk Stalkings," Type casting! as well as Ben Vareen's own television series, "Tenspeed and Brownshoe," created by Stephen J. Cannell, followed by recurring roles on "J.J. Starbuck," and "Booker." Previously, Ben Vareen had a recurring role as 'Uncle Phillip' on the ABC-TV hit series, "Webster." Ben Vareen's role in the television docudrama "Louis Armstrong - Chicago Style" led to several widely acclaimed roles, including the unforgettable 'Chicken George' in the Emmy Award-winning mini-series "Roots." Vereen followed these achievements with Ben Vareen's own network special, "Ben Vereen: Ben Vareen's Roots," which won seven Emmy Awards. Ben has received Honorary Doctorates from Boston's Emerson College, Brooklyn's St. Francis College, and most recently, from Chicago's prestigious Columbia College. In addition, Vereen has served as chairman of several renowned organizations including The American Heart Association and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Association. In 1991, Vereen spearheaded Ben Vareen's own organization, Celebrities for A Drug Free America, which raised more than $300,000 for drug rehabilitation centers, educational programs, and inner city community-based projects.
