Alec Baldwin claims he needed a court order to take his daughter, Ireland, to the premiere of his film "The Cat in the Hat" in 2003. He said he had to get another one to take her to the Oscars the next year when he was nominated for best supporting actor.

And when his ex-wife, Kim Basinger, wrote a seemingly innocuous dedication to the child on the label of a Luna nutrition bar, well, that made it into the court files, too, with Baldwin claiming Basinger's words were intended to impose "her belief system" on their daughter and cut him out of her "therapeutic involvement."

Basinger has filed declarations as well, depicting Baldwin as a monstrous and tyrannical dad given to outbursts that have left Ireland frightened, embarrassed and in tears.

At six years and counting, the epic legal battle over Ireland has generated countless court files, affidavits and motions. While Baldwin's and Basinger's careers have gone up and down during that time, their litigious zeal has remained constant.

At the center of this seemingly intractable war is an 11-year-old girl whose life has been parsed by court order, her every step documented in legal pleadings, from the number of days of summer 2004 she spent with her father (35) to the strep throat she was suffering on March 29, 2006.

Ireland is no stranger to the headlines, but nothing has compared to the outcry after her father's furious voice mail rant landed on the Internet last week. In it, Baldwin called his daughter a "rude, thoughtless little pig."

Baldwin will apologize publicly this morning to his daughter during an emotional interview taped Wednesday for "The View." During the interview, Baldwin told the show's hosts that he wanted to quit "30 Rock" so that the sitcom and the hundreds who worked on it wouldn't "be hurt by the situation." He also said: "If I never acted again, I couldn't care less."

He has a new calling, he told them, focusing on "parental alienation" and legislating fathers' rights. He's also working on a book that deals with the trauma caused by divorce.

The couple have joint custody of Ireland, but court documents show Baldwin constantly fighting for his share of time with the youngster.

Baldwin and Basinger have engaged in bruising exchanges in court. Basinger, 53, depicts Baldwin, 49, as having a temper that terrifies their daughter. Baldwin says Basinger is a manipulative agoraphobe who has turned Ireland against him and has restricted his access to her.

They separated in 2000, she filed for divorce the next year, and they subsequently were awarded joint custody of Ireland.

Some of Baldwin's longtime Hollywood friends deplore what he said on the tape but stress that it sprang from his sense of being alienated from his daughter -- whether real or imagined.

No matter how angry he is, they say, Baldwin stepped over the line when he verbally attacked his child. They say apologies won't suffice.

"If he just leaves it as it is, I think it's not good for him," said a studio insider who knows both actors. "If you have that kind of consistent anger, and the public knows about it, you need to deal with it. You've got to talk to somebody and let the people know. I think what he did was wrong, and it was wrong to blame it on Kim."

But, this insider said: "I know how much he loves his daughter and he would never physically hurt her."

However, as a father, I must say that only a daughter and an estranged wife will bring a father to lose it all together!

When I look back on mistakes I have made, I see that I was wrong to lose my temper With my children. Whenever I lose my temper I am wrong!

But, I do identify with the feeling of rage that a man can have when he has lost control of his family. So I will take away one point, one point only, for his behavior.

This is his estranged wife, Kim Basinger, pulling the strings and throwing the low blows. She is sabotaging the ties between a father and his daughter. Her behavior is despicable. Any woman that uses her child to joust with a man is a low life! But Alec played right into her trap!

And now we are obsessing over 'his' behavior. I think we should take a close look at Kim Basinger's behavior! She is the one who is making it impossible for Alec Baldwin to spend time with his daughter, during pre-arranged meetings that were set up so that a busy actor could stay in touch with his little girl.

I whole heartedly agree with you. As a mother, I can see the power she has using her child as a pawn in this battle with Alec and unfortuanately he did play into her hands. I can certainly understand his anger with his daughter and quite frankly I was quite impressed that he didn't use worse language. Albeit wrong I can understand the buttons that were pushed that got him to this point, since it has happened before, patience is hard to control under these circumstances for any father that has lost his family.

Although, Alec should have had more sense in leaving any kind of message where it is recorded. He must know by now that he is not dealing with a person with a sain or sensitive mind, she has been vindictive before, of course she would use what ever amo she could - he just played into her hands and I feel sorry for him. If you know him or speak to him tell him there are some sympathetic supporters on his side.

I could sense that in Alec's tirade was a kind of desperateness, a sadness. I don't think, and I heard his message many times on talk radio, that he would ever hurt his daughter. Children shouldn't be used as pawns in the games parents can play.

You are so very very wrong. This man has spoken to his daughter this way when only the two are together with strangers watching! This man has done exactly the same thing to this woman.

This man does bad things, and looks around to find everyone else to blame. This man is the true definition of narcissist -- look in the dictionary, you will see I'm not wrong.

Funny, the picture in my mind of whom I thought were supporting Alec Baldwin never resembled you.

I am almost 49 years young & unfortunately due to an unforseen medical problem, I had to undergo a hysterectomy and do not have children. I applaud your view on the Alec Balwin / Kim Basinger fiasco. I support your view 100% & I too think that the powers that be need to take a closer look at her behavior. For a child that young, who previously spent designated time with the parent she did not live with full time, to all of a sudden call off the normal/sheduled visit in the midst of a very heated custody battle, makes one wonder what was the trigger mechanism for this behavior.

I too, think that Kim Basinger used their child as a tool because she knew that the odds were against her in gaining full custody. Even though I am going through menopause, I am pretty even keeled with my emotions... but if I were a parent going through a divorce & suffered this type of incident, I would probably snap & say hurtful things to the wrong person. If Alec had left a message such as this on Kim's voice mail, the outcome through the media would have been far worse. We can only hope & pray that the powers that be figure out who really released this message to the media... Kim, not their child.

Bassinger is gaslighting him, making him crazy..

As far as family courts go, the man is always wrong.. Even when the wife shoots the husband. He was wrong of course.

The kid is obviously with her mother against her dad. And that’s that.

Alec can’t win. Can’t get her back.

He should walk away, forget the kid. Like she was never even born. Everything can more or less be forgotten in time. Fade away into sad memory. The rage disappears.

Life must go on despite everything.

The best revenge is for Alec (who I don’t like except as an actor) to harness all his anger and energy to

become absolutely the best actor he can be. He has shown he has the potential to be one of the greats like DeNiro
